Treacle Finally Home, Sweet Home, After 300 Days at Rescue Shelter

Treacle finally home, sweet home, after 300 days at rescue shelter

One year ago, stray cat Treacle was brought into the Hertfordshire Blue Cross centre after being found by a member of the public. Staff were able to trace her previous owner via her microchip who sadly could not take her back and signed her over into Blue Cross care. It was at this time that her previous owner disclosed Treacle had had suspected seizures in the past.

The team made the decision that due to her needs, Treacle would need to be closely monitored and they placed her into a foster home where she could get the 24/7 care she deserved. With no concerns highlighted from blood tests, Treacle’s suspected seizures were a mystery. Two weeks into her foster stay the seizures became apparent and at this stage the vet recommended a treatment of epilepsy medication to help the poorly cat.

The vets recommended that Treacle be seizure free for two months before rehoming her. With lots of TLC, dedication from her foster carer and careful management of her condition, Treacle became stable on her medication and finally was put up on the website to find a home on 2 August 2019 – five months later, a request was received to rehome the lovely little cat.

Staff at the shelter had no idea that the little black cat would be waiting almost a year before she was able to call somewhere ‘home’. Typically, black cats end up staying in rehoming centres much longer than their multi-coloured counterparts. After 298 days in the care of the charity, with her seizures under control, and regular vet tests to check her blood levels, Treacle finally met the match of her dreams and was able to go home.

Sarah Miller, Animal Welfare Assistant at Blue Cross Hertfordshire, said: “Treacle was such a lovely, affectionate cat, and the team were so excited that she found the perfect home. She’d had a tough time as no one was wanting to take on a cat with seizures, the anxiety of ‘what ifs’ was a big factor for many.

“She found a home that has fallen in love with her gorgeous green eyes and affectionate nature! Her new owner has bought a pet monitor camera so that if she does have any seizures he is able to record the footage, timer feeders to ensure she gets her medication on time, and she’s got all sorts of luxuries like seat warming cushions and plenty of her favourite toys to bat around.”

Blue Cross is continuing to rehome pets thorough the Home Direct scheme whilst the rehoming centre undergoes a refurbishment. Special measures are in place to comply with social distancing during the coronavirus outbreak, but pets are still looking for loving new homes.
