2017 ‘Street Cats’ photography competition winning image – photographed by Christine Lam Ying Loi
“This picture was taken in a fishing village on one of the islands around Hong Kong where many street cats live. Although this is a street cat, shop owners nearby feed him daily. He is famous on the island and many people love him – he has good looks and he’s smart. The cat in the background is his friend and they always play together. On that day, they stayed for a while for me to take photos with them. It seemed like they enjoyed being my models in front of the camera.”
It was the lack of colour which the judges liked about this picture, with the shallow depth of field allowing the focus to be on the cat while still showing its environment.
Christine’s winning image features in the 2018 Street Cats Calendar which will be sold to raise funds for International Cat Care’s cat welfare work.
