2017 ‘Street Cats’ photography competition winning image – photographed by Jonas Chan from Hong Kong
“This street cat lives in a local market in Hong Kong and likes to interact with humans. I think that the area around the market must be home to a street cat colony as there were several cats with clipped ears (like the cat in this photo) living there. It was not easy to take a portrait of her as every time I tried to squat down and take her photo, she would walk away immediately. So, when I saw her posed nicely in front of me, I quickly put my camera near the floor and pressed the shutter without looking through the viewfinder. It was lucky that she had eye-contact with my camera enabling me to get this picture.”
The judges loved this very engaging portrait style photograph with this little cat’s direct gaze and the colours behind.
Jonas’ winning image features in the 2018 Street Cats Calendar which will be sold to raise funds for International Cat Care’s cat welfare work.
