What is it about cats and the sun? I walked into our dining room today to find five of ours trying to squeeze into a couple of small bright patches that had miraculously appeared on the carpet. A bit like moths drawn to a flame, they can’t seem to resist the urge to toast themselves at every opportunity. Our Devon Rex, Gremlin, has a different slant on this as he prefers to flirt with spontaneous combustion by perching directly behind the Aga. In a desperate attempt to persuade him this really wasn’t a good idea, we’ve had to move his current favourite bed into the little alcove. Just beside where the kettle resides and nestled up to the back of the microwave. It’s the third cat bed to take pride of place in the kitchen. Heaven only knows what visitors think of us…
So here was Buddy from Bulgaria the other day, caught by a sunbeam on the dining room floor. All our furniture was thrown out long ago to make room for litter trays, beds and a giant scratching post. Sometimes though, all they need is a small patch of sun.

Yes! Our wood burning heater becomes a magnet for our cats as soon as we light it, and the closer, the better!
It’s the bit about being closer that worries me. We are now building a frame over the back of the Aga to stop Gremlin from perching on the three-inch wide beam! 😀
Cats are descendants from wild cats from Lybia – hence they love warmth. That doesn’t mean you should not guard them against too much heat as cats are bad judging if things are too hot.
We actually close the curtains on very hot days to stop our lot sunbathing too much. Merlin has white ears and he is on “ear curfew” during the hottest part of the day. He’s indoors at the moment, but will be allowed out again once the sun has left the garden 🙂
Cats are always drawn towards warmth, my cats loves laying on my laptop charger, my xbox one power cable, anything that gets warm.. We don’t get much sun though so that’s probably why they search for other sources of warmth.
It’s over 20C outside right now and we still have two cats in the beds by the Aga 🙂
Even cats need to “recharge” sometimes! I know the feeling about trading furniture for cat paraphernalia. The nicest piece of furniture in this house is Bear’s cat tree and yet he still insists on stealing my desk chair or my bed whenever the mood strikes!
A person after my own heart! We have two chairs in the front room and one in the study. Otherwise our 9 cats get to choose from around 24 cat beds spread liberally around the house 😀
The cat across the road always liked to sit on the windowsill. I thought it was just interested in the world outside. It could have been, but also makes sense that it was getting some warmth from the sun! 🙂
We see so little of it during our summers that you can’t blame them for making the most of a lovely day 🙂
We have a skylight in my kitchen, so my cats follow the sunlight on the kitchen floor….anywhere on the kitchen floor.
I think we need one of those! 🙂
Beautiful cat. Kitties are natural-born sun worshippers since their ancestors came from the Middle East. Cats were sacred animals back in Ancient Egypt.
Cats were sacred back then and they haven’t forgotten to this day 🙂
Beautiful photo! Cats always have a way of finding a warm spot, whether it’s a spot of sun or cuddling up to a warm body.
That would explain why I generally sleep with at least four cats on my side of the bed 😀
Such a cute kitty. Cats sire do enjoy sun puddles.
Sun puddles… I must remember that 🙂
