Hi everyone,
Today’s Purrsday Poetry post comes from Les Noble.
IN RESPECT OF CATS
Now, cats are often much maligned
By senile females, who, inclined
To think that felines were designed
To be mere furry playthings,
Then find dear pusskins will not stay
Inside the house by night and day,
But often likes to stray away;
This failure to remain inside
Deflates the dear old ladies’ pride,
And, wrathfully, they say things
And other people tell you that
When tricks you try to teach a cat,
You’d do as well to teach the mat! –
The cat is stupid, mulish! –
‘Compare,’ they tell you, ‘Man’s Best Friend,
Who hopefully “begs” on his end….’
(A silly way one’s time to spend!)
The dog thus works to get his food;
The cat does not, I won’t be rude,
But which is the most foolish?
So if you think a cat to be
A type of dog, fur-lined for free,
Or animated toy, you’ll see
They’re not what you expected;
A cat is useful – catching mice –
Diverting also – if you’re nice! –
And ornamental – at a price!
We all should love them, I agree;
However cats, undoubtedly,
Must also be respected!
I tender the above for your disapproval in the full knowledge that, having been written by me at a rather tender age, it does tend, er, to show it! – © March 2007

I like this ever so much!
Thank you <3
This is so neat. Even if you were young when you wrote it you were certainly in tune with rhyming scheme.
Love their guest poetry 🙂
It is one of the BEST things we have seen in a VERY LONG TIME~ You are a natural. I always say: Either you DO or DO NOT have the GIFT. Most assuredly, it is MORE THAN OBVIOUS YOU WERE BORN WITH THE GIFT! Excellent poem.
It is very refreshing from the garbage posted by “wannabe’s” who HAVE NO GIFT, but think they do. They should crawl in hole and bury themselves as their alleged poetry NOT EVEN worthy of being called poetry.
In my view, I am guessing you are a frequently published author, BORN WITH THE GIFT. Kudos on one of the best penned cat poems we have seen on Marc’s blog in a very long time. There was ONE other outstanding piece, but must claim to be Haiku and are not worthy of our time……..Thanks so much for HAVING AND SHARING THE GIFT IF WRITING. And, for those who do not know, it is VERY DIFFICULT to write really great poetry about cats and other animals. VERY TOUGH INDEED!
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but as poet who appreciates all forms of poetry, I find your comments to be narrow minded, over the top, and insulting to those who have their haiku posted on this blog. Respect!
BTW: I write haiku (Urban Haiku and More, Fierce Grace Press 2010) and my prose and haiku are widely published. I run the Brownstone Poets in Brooklyn, NY where I welcome all genres of poetry and prose.
Thank you Patricia! <3
