Flawed Perfection

Sleepy Computer Cat

Sleepy Computer Cat
Lola is our youngest cat. The little girl. The first we got (with her sister Maisi) when we began living together.

She’s far from being a perfect cat. She yells a lot, driving her daddy crazy. Sometimes she yells to let us know she’s hungry. Sometimes when she gets the food she’ll sniff it, have a little lick and then go and lie down to sleep.

Other times she yells for attention. Only thing is she goes hyper and runs away if we try to give her the attention, so it leads to quite the merry game of chase. Of course when she is eventually “caught” she will collapse in a soppy pile of fur and purrs.

On The MicrowaveAnd then there are the times that she yells just to hear the sound of her own voice. Our new flat has a glassed balcony which is quite echoey. On the few occasions she’s been able to go out there (it’s too cold to leave it open for them at the moment, though we will in the summer) she has quite happily sat in a corner yelling at the top of her lungs and listening to the noise reverberate around her. We tend to bring her back inside fairly quickly if she’s doing that. Don’t want to disturb the neighbours..!

We also have ongoing problems with Lola and food. Beyond the aforementioned yelling-for-but-not-eating. Lola seems to have some sort of digestive issue that causes her to be sick more often than is normal. We’ve had phases of it being daily, but usually the trouble was at least a couple of times a week.

In BetweenVet trips and testing have found nothing to explain the problems. We tried switching her to special (a.k.a. expensive) food designed for cats with allergies and that kind of helped, but we realised that, in fact, switching to just regular food in only the fish flavours had just as much effect.

We’ve been doing that for a while now. The last couple of months she’s been eating only cans of tuna flavoured food. We recently bought some salmon flavoured, for variation, and within half an hour of the first try eating it today she was rather spectacularly sick. I think we’ll stick to tuna.

Actually prior to today she hadn’t been sick in weeks – since before we moved to this new flat. We’re not entirely sure if that’s to do with the diet or the medicine she’s on. She gets a syringe full of medicine by mouth each morning and evening. She doesn’t appreciate getting it really, but it’s better than being sick! The medication is to help with reflux.

Despite her problems we do love Lola. She may drive us completely batty at times, but nobody’s perfect!

Love,

Lady Joyful

The “Pat me” message. Then, when you do pat her, she moves out of range and says”Pat me”. This will go on until one of us gets bored!

You are lucky. My tom has this naughty habit, now and then, to beg for attention, lie close to me, purrs when I pet him – and then he goes all crazy, bites and scratches. I still have the “scars” from Saturday morning.

One of “my” English cats (lives with my brother) is very fond of doing that. She rolls to have her tummy rubbed and then after a few moments will wrap herself around your hand and kick and bite it! Thanks for sharing 🙂

    Hi there,
What kind of food she eats ? Sometimes even expensive food can be full of chemicals – I really recommend natural cat food, i.e Applaws or Almo – I have been given to my cats with very good results .
Switching the food is another story – cats will most likely refuse to have completely new food – it is better to do gradually .
    Lola is adorable 🙂

Good suggestions Beata. I forget what the expensive allergy food she was on before is called, but she currently just eats tuna flavoured Whiskas. I’ll certainly have a look into those brands you mentioned, though I admit we’re a bit wary of changing her diet from something we know is fine, just in case she starts having problems again! She is adorable, isn’t she? 🙂 Thanks for commenting!

Lady Joyful is a real nice name – is she completely white all over without any mark?
Our ‘european shorthair’ cat Lilly is not choosey with her catfood, so I cannot join in that conversation … 😉
But she prefers fresh fish in small pieces on occasion, when we are cooking AND
    she’s doing really e v e r y thing for tuna … 😀

I always eat the same, I’m not only a picky eater, but I also have to throw up, when Granny changes my diet. I am getting Homeopathic medicines for this problem once in a while and they help… not that I change my dinner, but to make me feel better. Pawkisses for a Healthy week 🙂 <3

Our cat tiger is too quiet is to compare with the many cats or kitties I know.
He love to sit on the stool and watchin us having breakfast. He love just to jump on top of your stomach when you sleep. He never calls to me when he’s hungry. What Tiger did is to comes up on the table and sit there for a moment and we know he is waiting for his food. 🙂

I think you’re doing really well with Lola and she is lucky to have such a loving human to take care of her. She’s obviously allergic to something, but these things are so difficult to diagnose, so it may be a case of trial and error. Our (almost all white) Tammy has tended to be sick when we’ve changed her food and she also has quite sensitive skin, but has now settled down well with Royal Canin’s Mobility Diet – but she is an older cat, so this wouldn’t be appropriate for Lola. Maybe white cats are particularly delicate?

    • Lady Joyful says:

You could be right on that one! Lola’s sister Maisi (who looked very similar) was also quite delicate. Our Sampson (a black tom), on the other hand, is the furthest from delicate you could get…! Thanks for commenting 🙂

My Maggie gets sick whenever I give her something she hasn’t had in a while. Weird because she also “gets bored” with eating fish-flavored food all the time. But that’s the one that doesn’t make her sick! She won’t touch anything with salmon in it and she doesn’t like beef ……… we stick to fish with an occasional chicken flavor for variety. I spend what seems like hours picking out food for her!!!!! I fed her Wellness for a while but she totally hated it and would look at me like I was punishing her for something …….. LOL cats.

    • Lady Joyful says:

Oh yes that sounds just like Lola! Beef was the first one that we realised seemed to particularly have an effect on her. We thought all fish flavours were okay, but we’ll definitely be sticking to tuna from now on! Thanks for commenting 🙂

My “Marble” has symptoms like that, and my vet has diagnosed it as Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Eating what is known as a “novel” protein helped for a while, i.e. vennison, duck, and salmon, but only temporarily. He now is trying steroids. He gave him a shot of depamedrol meant to last 3 weeks, and sure enough it cleared up instantly. But Sunday marked 2 weeks 4 days and the old very soft stool returned. His next step is to prescribe prednisolone pills which I will pick up this week.
IBD is very expensive and I’m not crazy about putting him on steroids for life. He’s only 2 1/2. But what’s my alternative? Good luck.

    • sledpress says:

I have a cat with this ailment, though Mr. Ferguson’s primary symptom was simply weight loss. He’s been on a very small steroid dose for a couple of years and tolerates it quite well. Cats and dogs seem to handle long term steroids better than humans. Fergie gets a tuna flavored liquid prednisone three times a week and hates the ritual but doesn’t maul us.

      • Lady Joyful says:

Tuna flavoured medicine certainly sounds like something a cat would like! Or at least tolerate… Lola’s medicine is minty (or at least smells as though it is), and she tends to be pretty good about taking it. Thanks for commenting! 🙂

    • Lady Joyful says:

Oh, that does not sound like fun 🙁 Poor Marble. Hopefully the prednisolone helps! That’s the problem with loving our cats – it ends up costing money 😉 Thanks for commenting, and all the best to you and Marble 🙂

Let’s see… well, Nickel Catmium used to ONLY pee on a bath mat at the foot of the bed until Mr. Ferguson (we think he secretly married her) taught her to use the box. She’s a Bengal, so she’s going to be weird.

Agatha the tortie clamps her forepaws around people’s heads and grooms their hair until they scream for mercy (those little claws are sharp).

And Torvald Einar Magnussen, the mighty Viking Cat, has a split personality and will roll on your shoes purring, then gaze up and you and hiss. And then purr some more.

    • Lady Joyful says:

They sound like a fun group of furbabies 🙂 My MIL has a cat with a similar habit to Agatha’s, although he tends to just lick people’s hair rather than clawing at it. Thanks for commenting 🙂

Frogger likes to wake us up around 2 or 3 in the morning because he wants attention. So he yowls (I call it “singing the kitty cat blues”) and my bf goes and picks him up and puts him on the bed. Who’s got who trained now?

  11. coffeewitholiver says:

My mother’s cat that I inherited when she died likes to like plastic. It’s a weird sound, and it makes me nervous, but he never actually eats it. Other than that, he’s a cool guy. My big black Leo used to bite and kick, but he was a rescue and got over that after about 8 months. I’ll never forget the time he bit me on the nose….ouch!

Such a pretty girl. Our cat Samson has been a vomity puss since we adopted him 5 years ago. He was very much a hard food only cat, no people food at all, didn’t like much canned food. He started to drop weight and I noticed he was having trouble chewing his hard food, so we had our vet check him out. Turns out he had some bad teeth – 4 had to be extracted – and afterwards it was still hard for him to chew the hard food. Last week we started him and all our cats on a canned food only diet and he has been much better. The only time he throws up now is when he’s not fed within an hour of their regular feeding times, and that’s only bile, no food.

Reblogged this on ravenhawks' magazine and commented:
Let me see, there is Majesty[short for Her Majesty] who is determined that I will learn to hunt. My lessons consist of live mice, chipmunks, voles etc. being deposited at my feet. She then steps back to see what I will do when the critter takes of running. The disgust on her face is obvious when she has to catch it again. However she is purrfectly patient with her human kitten [me] since this has been going on for 5 years now. Fortunately her biological kittens were very quick studies.

  14. pilch92 says:

Lola is adorable. Have you tried chicken or beef or a limited ingredient food? Poor kitty, I hope she gets well soon.

    • Lady Joyful says:

Beef is one of the worst ingredients for her, it seems. We have had some success with chicken before, but for now the tuna does seem to be working and we’re reluctant to try anything else in case things get worse again! Thanks for your suggestion though 🙂

  15. Susan Frudd says:

Lola is most beautiful. I had a white and ginger cat Toby, he was as all my cats have been a rescue cat and was frequently sick my vet could find no problem but did suggest he thought it was an anti social thing. Toby continued throughout his life to do a sickie quite often. I have tried the real meat cat foods but they tended to cause constipation in my cats so back to Whiskas and Sheba with a little water added and some veg like green beans, carrots, peas much better now. I have 4 cats now and my older boy Ted is ginger and he is another kiss and cuddle me but when I’ve had enough I’ll bite you….lol….But let’s face it all the brilliant and not so brilliant things cats do and their intelligence and wisdom as they grow older are part of why we love them so much and let them control our lives. 🙂

  16. Holly'sMom says:

She is beautiful! Have they done any x-rays or ultrasounds to rule out a possible blockage? It truly doesn’t sound like that is the issue, but it might be worth checking into. A local pet supply store told me about a new food called Sojos. They have it for dogs and cats. It is apparently freeze dried raw food that you add water to prior to feeding. I have no clue if it would make a difference with Miss Lola, but thought I would mention it in case you wanted to look into it sometime. https://www.sojos.com/

    • Lady Joyful says:

Thanks for the suggestions! When we were doing investigations before the vet didn’t think it was worth doing x-rays or ultrasounds, and as the situation seems to have stabilised now (when she’s on this medicine and diet) I think it’s probably not worth the stress to her of doing it (she hates vet trips!) That said it’s definitely something we would do in future if it starts to become a problem again. And I will certainly look into that food you suggested 🙂 Thanks for commenting!
