Hi everyone,
Today we have a special Guest story from one of our Japanese readers MASAKAZU and their cat companion Koharu. This story was kindly translated from japanese by one of our other friends. Please do excuse any spelling mistakes you may find! 😉
We normally go to work which makes our cats alone in the house during the day at weekdays. However as you offered to feature Koharu, I decided to share my story with you and your followers.
The situation for cats in Japan is in some aspects sad, many “pet supermarkets” still exist in Japan. In such shops, you can see a variety of kittens in very small cages, almost like an exhibition. The amount of kittens that bad breeders produce are much more than our demand. Additionally some irresponsible pet owners discard their pet. It’s said that about 100,000 cats are killed every year in Japan. However NPO and city councils keep trying to improve this situation. There are of course some animal shelters for those poor cats here in Japan!!
The fateful day in March 2012, 4 kittens in a milk carton were found by a 10 year-old girl in a park. She took those to a vet. She looked after the tiny kittens and fed them every 2 hours, cleaned them etc. until new owners were found. I read the story on their blog and decided to contact them. After a few days, I could finally see the 4 kittens. One of those climbed up to my chest even though she hadn’t fully opened its eyes yet. It was a lovely, warm and early spring day. So we decided to call the kitten “Koharu” (little spring in Japanese). When Koharu was a kitten, I even took her to my office to feed every 2 hours. It was a tough time but a good memory for us as well.
There are many dangers outside like traffic accidents, possible attacks by wild birds and so on… That’s why we decided to keep Koharu indoors. Koharu never sharpens his claws at wrong places and doesn’t do any mischief. She has become a very calm, gentle and smart girl whom we love a lot. The brilliant cat certainly gives us irreplaceable, precious moments.
Koharu is now three year-old.
Our wonderful history with Koharu has already been recorded with pictures and it will be going on here!!
Thank you for reading their story and don’t forget to email us if you’d like to have your own story featured.
