Hi everyone,
While this is not one of our happy mews stories we thought it was important to share this. Originally seen on the BBC the Blue Cross charity is seeking help from people to replace the toys, blankets and scratching posts lost in the storm a few days ago. Luckily all cats were rescued which is the more important part!!!
Dozens of abandoned cats living at a Cambridge rescue centre have lost their toys and scratching posts after they were destroyed by flooding.
The Blue Cross charity centre had to throw out all 90 posts when they became saturated by drain water after torrential rain early on Friday.
All the animals were safe, although 15 kittens had to be evacuated from the nursery which was covered in sludge.
The centre has appealed for help to replace the posts and toys.
There are currently 46 cats and kittens looking for new homes at the charity’s Garlic Row centre, animal welfare assistant Claire Thomas said.
The animals did not seem “too traumatised” by the torrential downpour or standing water in their pens, she said.
However, staff were “gutted” when they saw the devastation caused by the overnight storm.
The rescue centre was among a number of businesses and organisations in Cambridge affected by the overnight storm.
The cat rescue centre has now been cleaned up and the destroyed posts, toys and blankets piled on the lawn.
It would not be sanitary to dry them out, Miss Thomas added, so they will all need to be replaced.
The Cambridge branch of charity Blue Cross cares for over 400 cats and kittens every year.
If you would like to help their contact details can be found here or you can message them on Facebook.

Now that would be a good chance for some UK-based-business specialising in cat accessories to jump in and donate and thus get well known to the future cat owners. I know if I was something like Fressnapf, just from the UK I would totally use that chance.
We only have pets at home and pets corner 😮 but hopefully either of those two will read this and think exactly that.
What I think even more important: Can they make their shelter flood-proof? Or relocate to a flood-proof site?
That would be even safer 🙁
At least all the cats are safe.
Indeed! 🙂
Oh, how I love the sleepy looking kitty! Hey, did you already see my Side by Side post about my cat-sitting experience?
No! Where is it? 🙂
Reblogged this on Cain S. Latrani.
Bummer! I hate to hear of kitties going without. A UK business should take the opportunity to get lots of publicity and help these guys and girls. Kitties are in need!
(((Shoko)))
I know! I’ll be rallying up people at work tomorrow haha
So glad the cats & kittens are safe!
Me too 🙂
Oh no, it’s so sad ! We share and hope it will help ! Purrs
Thank you! 🙂
I am going to be sending them some of my toys x x
Thank you <3 I'll be doing a parcel too though not self made toys. Haha
Heartbreaking Story. UK residents: Please help them out if you can! They are in dire need, it appears! So very sad.
Thank you <3
Hope they get more donations than they ever had.
Me too. I’ll be trying to organise a donation event at work tomorrow.
A great story about a good cause. Over here in America we have programs for cats that are abandoned, not just cats, but dogs and other animals in need of homes as well. Knowing that there is a sad and lonely animal in need of love and something to play with makes me sad. But, knowing there are programs like this is wonderful. I hope they get as many donations as possible from the residents in the UK.
Luckily we have many such programs too. It always saddens me how many animals seem to get abandoned. 🙁
I’m so glad that all the cats were rescued! Such sweet little faces.
Yes <3
I’m glad all the cats are safe, although without toys and posts. That much rain! We are in drought here, with 95 degrees weather and a hot dry wind.
The weather here is very changeable Atm 😡
I am glad that the kitties were saved. How sad about all their stuff- I wonder if some could be salvaged with dehumidifiers.
They deemed it unsafe due to possible contamination from sewage water :(. Hopefully they’ll get a UK company to donate them stuff.
I wish I could help, but my 15 year old Molly doesn’t like other kitties. So sad. Such beautiful pets that need love.
Thank you for the thought tho. 🙂
I still need to send you a kitty poem. I have not forgotten … in the middle of trying to finish a book. The poem will be my relaxation break. I could use one. lol
Take your time. 🙂 looking forward to it. 😀
Glad to know that all kitties were safe. 🙂
Thanks 🙂
Unbelievable! Cambridge in flood, and here no rain since a month of heat and sun! To help the Rescue Center I’ll donate some money, it’s the only thing I can do from this part of Europe 😀
Ciao
Sid
Awww thank you!!! I’ll be sending them som toys this week. 🙂 hopefully the cats like catnip. ?
Poor cats, I hope they get all their toys and stuff back.
I know 🙁 I’m sure they will! Many people shared this so hopefully it reached some of the larger companies that can make a difference to this. 🙂
