Hey everyone,
Please find below some details and an excerpt of this sunday’s Parade magazine. Shame we are not in the US or I would pick one up. đ
Theyâre cute, loyal, and charming.  But whatâs really going on inside those furry little heads?  Parade went to the experts (the human kind!) for the answers.  Excerpts below:
If men are from Mars and women are from Venus, then cats and dogs must come from Jupiter. How else to explain some of their, well, alien behaviors? Just what, exactly, is a dog thinking when he rolls around in something stinky? If a cat naps on a computer keyboard, is it because sheâs expecting an email? We went to the experts (the human kind!) for answers.
Why can a cat always land on its feet?
âCats have a very flexible spine that allows them to twist in the air and right themselves as they fall,â says ÂZawistowski. âBut cats can injure themselves quite severely if they fall from high places. Every year, vets treat [many] cats that fall from windows in upper floors of apartment buildings. This is so common that it has a name, âhigh rise syndrome,â due to the consistent nature of the injuries.â
Do cats and dogs have a sense of humor?
According to the experts we spoke to, studies have not yet been done to assess petsâ sense of humor. But if weâre talking about a sense of fun, then the answer is yes. We humans so prize fun in dogs, weâve ranked the breeds on a playfulness scale. Among those at the top: Irish setters, English springer spaniels, ÂAiredales, miniature schnauzers, and poodles. As for cats, says ÂJackson Galaxy, host of Animal Planetâs My Cat From Hell,âThe fact that cats live willingly with us is proof positive they have a sense of humor!â
Can a cat be trained the way a dog can?
Cats are not as inherently interested in pleasing humans as dogs are, âbut they can be trained if thereâs something in it for them,â says cat behaviorist Mieshelle Nagelschneider, author of the book The Cat Whisperer. âIâve trained my cats to give me high fives.â Some cat owners use clicker training; learn more at aspca.org/pet-care/virtual-pet-behaviorist.
One of my cats loves catnip; the other couldnât care less. What gives?
Catnip, a member of the mint family, contains a substance called nepetalactone that stimulates some, but not all, cats. âAbout one-third to one-half of all cats are sensitive to it,â says Zawistowski. âTheyâll respond by rolling in it and acting intoxicated.â Unfortunately for Kitty, the catnip high lasts only about 15 minutes.
Why does my cat like to sleep in weird places, like atop keyboards or inside cardboard boxes?
Simply put, itâs what their ancestors did. âIn the wild, cats like to take refuge in enclosed spaces and also like to claim locations because of their territorial nature,â says Nagelschneider. âAnd what cat can pass up a warm keyboard? Itâs made particularly special because a human is touching it all the time.â
I have a âknead-yâ cat. Whatâs she up to?
âThis remnant behavior from kittenhood reminds cats of nursing on their mother,â says Nagelschneider. Domesticated adult cats do it for attentionâa good thing, adds Yin: âItâs something cats do when they are contented.â
Why do cats like to nap so much?
Cats typically sleep 12 to 16 hours a day, and because theyâre crepuscular, meaning they hunt at dawn or dusk, they can be more active at night. But house cats donât necessarily needâor wantâto sleep as much as they do, says Yin. âHow much a cat sleeps has a lot to do with how stimulating its environment is.â To cure Bored Cat Syndromeâthe real name for this forced kitty ennuiâprovide your cat with toys, tiered cat trees, and cat tunnels when youâre gone, and bubbles, lasers, and fishing poleâtype âprey toysâ when youâre home and can play with her.
Can cats and dogs get colds from us?
Dogs and cats can get colds, with the same miserable symptoms (sneezing, coughing, Âwatery eyes) we get, but they donât catch them from us. Most viruses are unique to a species; whereas our common cold is caused primarily by the rhinovirus, most dog colds come from Bordetella bacteria or canine flu viruses, and most cat colds are due to feline herpes, caliciviruses, or Bordetella bacteria. Nonetheless, recently researchers have expressed concern about âreverse zoonosis,â in which humans pass diseases to Âanimals through mutations and new viral forms. So if you are under the weather, rather than snuggling up with Fluffy, keep your distanceâfor her safety.
My cat always seems to gravitate toward people who either donât like cats or are allergic. Am I imagining this?
Probably not. As with most cat behaviors, it all boils down to survival, says cat Nagelschneider. âCats like to play it safe and approach people who are not overtly trying to draw their attention with expressions, vocalizations, and other gestures. With someone they donât know, those gestures can feel like too much pressure and even be perceived as threatening. People who are averse to cats are often passive, and to cats, this can feel safer.â
Why does my cat like to drink out of water glasses and sinks?
âIn nature, cats will avoid drinking water that is next to dead prey because the water may be contaminated with bacteria,â says Nagelschneider. âInside the home, this instinct also appliesâthey want to drink water that is located far away from their store-bought food to ensure healthy water. We always tell cat owners to be sure to locate the water bowl in its own designated âwatering holeâ area.â
Why donât cats like sweets the way dogs do?
âCats are carnivores; they need to eat meat and they donât digest carbohydrates as well,â says Dr. Yin. âThey are also more discriminating about food than dogs, and more susceptible to toxins than dogs. Dogs, in contrast, evolved as scavengers, living off human dump sites, and the ones that did the best at that survived. They are better adapted to eating the things we do.â And that rapture we feel over chocolate? Thereâs another good reason why cats instead say âMeh,â not âMeow.â Says Zawistowski: âAt some point during the evolution of cats, a mutation in their sensory system caused them to lose the capacity to taste sweet.â
What is my cat trying to tell me when he rubs up against my leg?
Cats have scent glands on both their cheeks and the base of their tails, and they are leaving their scent marks. âRubbing against humans and other cats can help maintain the very important group scent that serves as a social glue,â says Nagelschneider. âCats feel affiliated and relaxed with those that carry the group scent. People have the same last name in families, but cats have scent last names. Rubbing can be proprietary in nature as well, and the cat may be claiming you if he or she rubs on you. This also goes for leaving their scent and pheromones on objects they want to claim to let other cats know theyâve been there. For example, a cat may mark a couch if they canât mark you because youâre busy putting the groceries away.â
Why do cats automatically know to pee in litter boxes?
Cats instinctually dig and bury their urine and feces, but not just for our convenience. Because a catâs urine has a strong odor that can potentially be smelled by predators, wild cats learned to urinate away from where they slept and ate, and to cover their urine. That instinct is still strong today in domestic cats. Unfortunately, not using litter boxes (often a sign of some other behavioral problem, like stress or anxiety) is the No. 1 complaint of cat owners and the No. 1 reason millions of cats are surrendered to shelters each year. âIâve heard of owners finding unwelcome gifts from their cats inside shoes and coffee mugs,â says Nagelshneider. âI once solved the curious case of a smelly toaster,â she says in her book The Cat Whisperer.

This is a great article! I so enjoyed it – funny how I never tire of kitty factoids! ?
Thank you :)!
Not sure I agree with all of this.
“People who are averse to cats are often passive, and to cats, this can feel safer.â My cat went straight for a guy that was quite aggressive and simply hated cats. It was great fun because I didn’t like the man. Heh, heh.
And, when I married, my cat showed who was boss by making a mess on his side of the bed. That may have been stress, but it was more than that. My cat lost the battle when hubby wiped his nose in it. đ
Haha oh dear xD. And yeah that’s the thin with factoids – they are right a lot just not always hehe đ
What a purrrfect post (except fur the dog part)! *(trills)*

Thank you! đ
Great article đ with catnip to it seems either the very young or older cats like it..one of my girls goes nuts for it but also for Coriander..i am yet to be able to grow it without Cleo rolling and rubbing and chewing it to death đ hugs Fozziemum đ
Lol I did not know about coriander and cats haha. I can’t even have any flowers in my flat because our girl will declare it her personal salad bar xD
Hahahahaah funny isn’t it the things they love…:) đ

That was very informative. I’ve often wondered why my cat Nettie enjoys drinking out of my water glass or is often waiting for me to turn on the bathroom sink so she can take a sip.
Nettie also likes to sleep in the sink. The bathroom must be her territory. She gets upset when our other cat Squeaky attempts to use the litter box in there. Its funny that these two cats are fighting over that one tiny litterbox in the bathroom, when there are two large litterboxes for them to use in other areas of the apartment.
Ha that is so typical tho. They want that one litter box because it’s their favourite one xD. My two once had an argument over a toy mouse of which we had 6 all the same colour but no they wanted the same one <.<'
My cat “kneads” whenever we lay together. I always thought it meant she was taken away from her mother too soon (she is a rescue) but I’m glad to know she’s contented đ
đ yeah we have one of those as well haha
I couldn’t refrain from commenting. Very well written!
Thank you đ
This was very interesting. I’ll have to stop keeping the cats’ water next to their food. đ
You are welcome đ glad it was useful. đ
